What is a herb grinder?
A herb grinder is a small, handheld device that is used to grind dry herbs in to small granules which can then be used in bongs, vaporizers, or roll ups.
At the basic level, they are made up of two opposing components filled with teeth, which when placed together, can be rotated in a twisting motion to grind any herbs placed inside. However, more complex models will include extra components, such as a pollen trap, a stash box, and removable teeth.
Why use a grinder?
Most regular smokers will know the importance of using a grinder to break up their dry herbs or tobacco before smoking it. But why are they needed, exactly? And what makes them so popular and commonplace in the smoking world?
Grinders are used to shred dry herbs into a fine powder, so that they can be placed in a bong, pipe, or roll up to be smoked. They can also be used by cooking aficionados experimenting with an array of spices.
Grinding your herbs before smoking them helps to break the material down into tiny, evenly-shaped pieces. This makes them easier to pack into a bowl or roll up, while they will also burn more consistently, producing a smoother and better-tasting hit to your lungs.
Best types of grinder
Herb grinders come in all shapes and sizes, and here at Everyone Does It we stock a huge range of them in a wide array of materials and styles, so you can be sure to find one that takes your fancy.
But with so many different types of grinder to choose from, you may not exactly know where to begin your search for the perfect grinder. First of all, you should consider which material you want your grinder to be made out of:
Metal grinders: These are the ‘gold standard’ of herb grinders. Made from a variety of highly durable metals, including aluminium, stainless steel, and titanium, metal herb grinders are typically the most expensive, but are also the most reliable. Most metal grinders are 3-piece or 4-piece grinders, coming with a pollen catcher and storage chamber.
Wooden grinders: These are more traditional looking grinders - they often look very classy with intricate carvings, and wouldn’t look out of place on your mantelpiece. The teeth in wooden grinders are often made of metal, which means they won’t break down easily and should last you a while, but wooden grinders overall are often harder to clean than plastic or metal grinders.
Plastic grinders: The cheapest and most ubiquitous type of grinders are plastic ones. They can often be found for as little as £5 or less, and will typically consist of just two components (the lid and base). The grinding teeth will normally be plastic too, meaning they will break down after prolonged use, while plastic grinders themselves can easily be broken by simply dropping them on a hard floor. There are, however, different levels of plastic grinder, with the best and most durable being silicone or acrylic grinders.
Stone grinders: This is by far the least common type of material used in herb grinders, but they can be extremely decorative pieces should you come across one. Stone grinders are more durable than plastic grinders, but can easily be chipped if you’re not careful with them. They are also quite expensive for their size and overall function.
Once you’ve chosen your material, you then decide what size you want your grinder to be, or how many components it has:
2-piece grinders: This is the most basic type of grinder, and consists of just a lid and a base, both of which have teeth for grinding.
3-piece grinders: These grinders include an extra component - a pollen catcher, which is basically a screen with tiny holes in it that filters out the pollen and other tiny particles from your herbs.
4-piece grinders: These grinders have all of the above, plus a storage compartment that allows you to collect your ground herbs and discreetly hide them away for later use.
There are also a number of speciality grinders that we stock here at EDIT, so look out for these features when shopping around:
Magnetic grinders: Not strictly a special type of grinder, as the vast majority of them will have little magnets that bind the components together, especially high-end grinders. Magnetic grinders are less likely to fall apart when you drop them, meaning your ground herbs will be safe from spilling everywhere should you be clumsy when grinding.
Electric grinders: These speciality grinders do all the hard work for you. With electric grinders, you simply put your dry herbs inside, and they will be rapidly ground in a matter of seconds, simply at the press of the button.
Crank grinders: These types of grinder require a little more work, but in reality they’re still extremely simple to use. Crank grinders include a lever on the outside which you can turn to grind your herbs faster than you would be able to with a regular grinder.
Novelty grinders: We also stock a wide range of novelty grinders which come in all sorts of funky colours and designs. The main selling point of these grinders is their aesthetic, and they’re great for showing off to your friends during a session.
