What is a dry herb vaporizer?
A dry herb vaporizer is a device that heats up dry herb to burn off its essential oils, creating a vapour for you to inhale. This vapour will contain the intense flavour of the dry herb that you’re burning, and provides a smooth, pleasurable hit to the throat.
Dry herb vaporizers are fundamentally different to concentrate vaporizers, also known as wax pens or dab pens, which burn oil concentrate or wax to create a vapour.
What types of dry herb vaporizer are available?
There’s a huge range of dry herb vaporizers that come in all shapes and sizes, and here at EDIT we stock all the best products from the most trusted manufacturers. But it’s important to know the fundamental differences between the types of dry herb vapes that you can buy.
Firstly, you will need to decide whether you want a portable vaporizer or dekstop vaporizer. Whereas portable vaporizers, often called vape pens, are small and can be carried around in your pocket or handbag, and must be charged regularly, desktop vaporizers are much larger devices that must be plugged in to the mains to work.
Dry herb vaporizers also come in a variety of materials, with the best quality products using metals such as stainless steel, titanium, or aluminium.
How do dry herb vaporizers work?
The exact way your dry herb vaporizer works will depend on the heating method used. In general, there are two main types of heating methods for dry herb vapes - conduction heating or convection heating.
While conduction vaporizers directly heat your dry herb via a heating element such as a coil, convection vaporizers heat the air around your dry herb. A small number of dry herb vaporizers also use a combination of the two technologies, and these are known as hybrid dry herb vaporizers.
No matter which type of dry herb vaporizer you use, the chamber where you insert the dry herb is heated to very high levels - often in excess of 200°C. However, you won’t feel anywhere near this heat when handling your device or inhaling the vapour, and all fully licenced products meet strict safety standards.
What does a dry herb vaporizer consist of?
Dry herb vapes, no matter which type you have, will be typically be made up of four key components:
- Vape battery: This will either be a rechargeable battery in portable vapes, or a battery that’s powered directly from the mains in desktop vapes. Battery power is measured in mAh, with the higher the value, the more powerful the device. However, some dry herb vaporizers will use a torch lighter to heat your dry herb instead, so be aware of these when comparing products.
- Herbal chamber: Also called the herbal oven, this is the chamber that you place your dry herb in for it to be vapourised. Vaporizer chambers come in a variety of materials, including metals such as stainless steel and titanium, ceramic, and even glass. All of these come with different qualities so it’s important to know the differences - whatever you do, don’t get a vaporizer with a plastic herbal chamber.
- Heating element: This is what is used to heat the herbal chamber, and thus your dry herb. With conduction vapes, the heating component will typically be a small coil, or a heating plate, which makes direct contact with the dry herb to heat it up. Convection vapes, on the other hand, use gas or liquid to heat the dry herb consistently.
- Mouthpiece: This is where you put your mouth in order to inhale. Some vapes may require you to press a button for the mouthpiece to be activated, although with the best products you just simply take a toke. The vapour that is created in the herbal chamber is transferred to the mouthpiece via an air path, which is a small tube that connects the two.
Depending on the type of vape you get, some of these components may require regular cleaning, maintenance, and even replacing. Luckily, EDIT stocks a wide range of vape accessories to fit most models of dry herb vaporizer. So, if you’re after a specific part, just type what you’re looking for in the search bar above.
How to use dry herb vaporizers
To start using your dry herb vaporizer, you must first make sure your device has power. If it’s a desktop vape, then it must be plugged in to the wall, and if it’s a portable vape then it must have sufficient charge.
You can then go ahead and put your dry herb into the chamber. For the best results, you should always make sure to grind your dry herb first, and not to pack it too tightly. You want there to be enough space and air for the heat to effectively flow through and vapourise your dry herb.
Once your dry herb is in the chamber, you can now set your preferred temperature and your vape will begin heating it to create a vapour. You then simply put your lips to the mouthpiece and inhale, giving you a smooth hit of vapour containing the key ingredients of your dry herb.
After you’ve finished your vaping session, make sure to turn off your device the same way your turned it on. Let it cool down for at least a minute, and then clean your heating chamber or oven before it’s next use.
What temperature should I set my dry herb vape to?
People have different preferences to which temperature they set their dry herb vape to, and we’d suggest playing around with different settings to see which one works for you.
As a general rule of thumb, you should be heating your dry herb at temperatures between 160°C to 220°C. Anything higher than this can risk burning out the components of your vape, and even destroying your device completely.
Dry herb typically contains many different components, all of which vapourise at slightly different temperatures. Therefore, the higher you set the temperature, the wider variety of components you’ll be inhaling. However, higher temperatures also tend to give a harsher feel to the throat, so if you’re after good-tasting vapour then you should probably set it lower.
How do I tell when my dry herb is done in a vaporizer?
Knowing when your dry herb has been sufficiently vapourised, and when it’s time to replace it, ultimately comes down to your personal preferences. Many users will replace their dry herbs once they’ve turned a brownish colour. However, you could still get some hits out of it even when brown, by burning it at a higher temperature, although the flavour will become increasingly unpleasant.
As a general rule of thumb, each bowl of herb should last between 5 to 15 minutes, although this will depend on your own preferences, as well as other factors like how strong your puffs are, and how tightly you’ve packed your dry herb.
How do I clean my dry herb vape?
It’s important to clean your dry herb vaporizer after each use in order to maintain its efficiency and prevent you from tasting any nasty flavours when you next light up. Each vape may have a slightly different way of going about it, so we recommend referring to your user manual to see how to clean your device in the most effective way.
However, in general, there are four main steps to cleaning your dry herb vaporizer:
- Remove the used ground herbs from the heating chamber.
- Either rinse the inside of the chamber with isopropyl alcohol, or clean with a cotton swab dabbed in it.
- Rinse out the heating chamber with water.
- Leave the vaporizer to dry before using again.
Benefits of dry herb vaporizers
There are many reasons why you should choose dry herb vaporizers over smoking and other types of vapes. These include:
- Precise temperature controls: Dry herb vaporizers typically come with precise temperature controls which allow to play around and find the perfect temp for your personal vaping experience. Desktop vaporizers tend to have the best temperature settings.
- Discreet: The smell of the vapour produced by dry herb vapes is much less pungent, and actually more pleasant, than the smoke produced from the same herbs in a roll up. This allows you to enjoy your dry herbs more discreetly, without letting everyone around you know what you’re up to.
- Less messy than concentrates: The main advantage of using a dry herb vape over a concentrate vaporizer is the substance you’re vapourising. Dry herbs are much less messy, sticky, and overall much more easier to manage than waxes or concentrates.
- Better taste: Dry herb vapes provide a much smoother hit to the throat than smoking does, while it also provides an all-round better taste as you’re only burning the bits of the plant that you want. What’s more, the temperature controls can allow you to find the perfect balance of strength and flavour.
- Better for your health: As well as providing a more pleasant flavour, vaping dry herbs has also been found to be much healthier than smoking them. This is because you’re only combusting around the 10% of the plant - just the bits you want - without burning the rest of it, which typically includes carcinogens and other nasty substances.
