What is a portable vaporizer?
Portable vaporizers are compact, hand-held devices that allow you to vape either dry herbs or wax concentrate on the go. Unlike desktop vaporizers, they can usually be carried around in your pocket or handbag, and can be used anywhere as long as the battery has sufficient charge.
The portability and ease-of-use of these devices, as well as the fact they’re much cheaper than desktop units, has made these portable devices one of the most popular and common type of vape on the market.
However, portable vapes should not be confused with vape pens, which are even smaller and look more similar to an actual pen. Portable vapes are often chunkier, but more efficient and long-lasting, than standard vape pens, but this also means they’re often pricier too.
What types of portable vaporizer are there?
When scouring the market for a new portable vaporizer, you’ll find they come in all sorts of styles and sizes.
First of all, you need to consider what it is you like to vape. Some portable vaporizers are designed for vaping dry herbs, while others work with oil concentrate or e-liquids. If you like to dabble with all of these materials, then there are also dual-use vaporizers available.
But whichever type of materials you’re vaping, there are two distinct types of portable vaporizer in which the heating method is slightly different:
- Conduction vaporizers: These portable vaporizers include a heating element, typically a small metal coil, which heats up your materials via direct contact. This essentially works like a frying pan, and coils can reach temperatures of up to 300° While conduction vaporizers are often less efficient, and many don’t come with precise temperature controls, they often provide the best bang for your buck.
- Convection vaporizers: These portable vapes work more like an oven than a cooker, using hot air to heat up your dry herbs or concentrate instead of direct contact. This produces better quality, and better tasting, vapour, while it’s also a more efficient heating method - meaning your sessions will last longer. You won’t get any of that burning taste that you may sometimes get with conduction vaporizers when it gets too hot or your herbs are spent.
- Hybrid vaporizers: Theses portable vaporizers combine both conduction and convection heating methods to give a better all-round vaping experience. The conduction heating element allows your dry herbs or concentrate to heat up quickly, while the convection heating method provides a smooth hit of vapour. While hybrid portable vaporizers are currently quite rare, they’re slowly picking up in popularity.
There can also be variations in the power source. While most portable vaporizers will have a rechargeable battery, and some high-end vapes even having a replaceable battery, some use a butane energy source instead. These work similar to traditional lighters, with a small tank that can be refilled with butane, and a spark that can turn this energy source into heat or a flame.
Butane portable vaporizers are quite rare, but they’re actually very efficient, and they come with the added bonus of not having to be recharged frequently. You will, of course, have to refill the butane tank once it runs dry.
How do portable vaporizers work?
Portable vapes typically consist of three main parts - a heating chamber or oven, a battery or energy source, and a mouthpiece typically made of glass. The heating chamber is where you place your dry herbs or wax, the battery or energy source is used to heat these materials up, and the glass mouthpiece is where you put your lips to inhale the vapour.
Whichever type of portable device you have, using it should be fairly straightforward. First of all, you need to put your ground herbs, concentrate, or e-liquid into the heating chamber, and then turn it on via the power button.
You can then set it to your preferred temperature. While conduction vapes will typically have a pre-set temperature, convection vapes will usually have precise temperature settings, either with button controls or a digital display, that allow you to play around and find the perfect temperature for you.
Once the exact temperature you desire is reached, you simply draw the vapour into your lungs by inhaling via the mouthpiece.
It’s also important to clean your heating chamber after each session, as failure to do so will lead to a build up of dirt and negatively affect the flavour of your vapour. It’s pretty easy to do - just clear the chamber of any debris, wipe it with a swab soaked in isopropyl alcohol, rinse it out with water, and leave it to dry.
Benefits of portable vaporizers
There are many benefits of using portable vapes over traditional methods of smoking and other types of vape such as desktop vaporizers. However, there are also some drawbacks, so let’s weigh up the pros and cons of portable vaporizers to see if they’re right type of product for you:
Pros
- Can be used out and about
- Much more discreet than desktop vapes
- Many models can be used with a variety of materials
- Typically cheaper than desktop vaporizers
Cons
- Has to be recharged or refilled, depending on it being a battery vape or butane vape
- Quality of vapour not as good as with desktop vapes
- More bulky and less discreet than vape pens
- Smaller models can be tricky to clean
Are portable vaporizers safe?
The vast majority of portable vaporizers are extremely safe to use, especially ones from trusted brands and manufacturers. However, a small number of portable vaporizers, typically cheaper or counterfeit models, have been reported to overheat to dangerous levels. For this reason, EDIT only stocks portable vaporizers that have been thoroughly tested and gone through rigorous safety checks, so you can shop here in confidence.
Portable vaporizers also have great health benefits when compared to traditional methods of smoking. This is because you’re not combusting your materials, and only heating it to levels that burn off the essential oils you want, without any of the toxins and other carcinogens that you get when burning dry herbs or concentrates with a direct flame.
Do portable vaporizers smell?
The short answer to this is yes, portable vaporizers do give off a smell of the materials you’re vaping when in use. However, the smell is far less potent, and much less long-lasting, than the smell produced by smoking. This is because you’re extracting far less of the material itself, and the smell is only apparent when you draw the vapour itself - not the constant lingering smell you get with cigarettes or roll ups. For this reason, portable vapes offer a much more discreet way of enjoying your dry herbs or wax.
Are portable vaporizers the same as vape pens?
Technically no, although the terms are often conflated and it’s quite common to be confused by the two. The main difference between portable vaporizers and vape pens is their shape and size - while vape pens are usually thinner and look like an actual pen, or an old e-cigarette, portable vaporizers are often a bit more chunky, and come in a wide range of shapes including ones that look like an inhaler or a mobile phone.
The heating element is often different between the two as well, with the heating coil typically being exposed on vape pens - this is often the easiest way to tell the difference at first glance.
What is the best portable vaporizer?
As we’ve mentioned before, portable vaporizers come in all shapes and sizes, can have different heating methods, as well as different power sources. All of these variances have their own pros and cons, so finding the best portable device for yourself will ultimately come down to personal preference.
That being said, at Everyone Does It we stock all the best portable vaporizers from the most popular brands in the UK, so after a quick search you can be sure to find a vape that fits your needs and budget.
