This awesome range of bongs and water pipes are equipped with ice notches or ice twists, allowing you to place ice cubes inside the tube for a frosty cool hit. Ice bongs have increased in popularity in recent years as discerning connoisseur smokers demand cooler and smoother hits from their favourite bongs and bubblers. Here at EDIT, you’ll find top ice bongs in glass and acrylic materials such as the 8 Arm Tree Percolator Ice Bong by Grace Glass, 5mm Ice Cylinder Bong by EHLE Glass, and many more.
What is an ice bong?
An ice bong is a type of bong, typically made out of glass but could also be an acrylic or silicone bong, that includes small notches known as ice catchers at the bottom of the neck, usually just above the water chamber. Placing ice in these notches helps to cool down the smoke before it reaches the mouthpiece, giving a much smoother hit and overall better smoking experience.
How do ice bongs work?
Ice bongs work in much a similar way to regular bongs, with the added feature of the ice catcher providing an extra level of cooling for an altogether more pleasant smoking experience.
With most ice bongs, you simply place your ice cubes in the ice catcher by gently dropping it down the neck. The cubes will be caught by the ice catcher, stopping them from entering the water chamber. You can put as much or as little ice as you want - some smokers prefer to place just one or two ice cubes in the ice catcher, but you can also fill the whole neck up with ice if you desire.
You then place your dry herbs into the bowl, light them, and inhale through the mouthpiece, in exactly the same way you would with any type of glass bong. The smoke will pass through the water, which filters out many of the impurities and toxins, and it will then travel up the neck, passing through the ice and thus cooling down as it makes its way up and into your lungs.
What are the benefits of using an ice bong?
There are many benefits of using a bong with an ice catcher over one without. These include:
- Cooler smoke: The most obvious advantage and selling point of ice bongs is the fact that they lower the temperature of your smoke, providing a much smoother and more pleasant hit.
- Extra filtration: The ice cubes in an ice bong also act as an extra level of filtration on top of the water. As the smoke passes through the ice, more impurities and toxins are removed, creating a better tasting and healthier hit to your lungs.
- Bigger hits: Because of the extra level of filtration that the ice provides, the smoke has less impurities and thus feels much smoother, allowing you to take even bigger hits much more comfortably.
- Prevents splashing: The ice catcher itself acts as a buffer between the water chamber and the bong’s neck, meaning you’re much less likely to inadvertently splash your bong water about and end up with a mouthful of it when taking a hit.
- Looks good: While not relevant to the actual quality of the smoke, watching your smoke swirl around the ice cubes as it makes its way to your lungs looks pretty cool to say the least.
What to consider when looking for an ice bong
Ice bongs come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, while prices can also range significantly depending on the model you choose. When looking for the perfect ice bong for you, consider the following:
- Material: Most ice bongs, and most bongs in general, are made out of glass. These often represent the best quality ice bongs and are usually surprisingly durable, but they’re also more susceptible to breaking than cheaper silicone or acrylic bongs.
- How you use it: Some of the larger and more expensive ice bongs are designed for use at home, and won’t look out of place as a decorative ornament on your mantelpiece. However, if you’re a regular smoker and you want to use your ice bong on the go, consider a portable, mini bong, also known as bubblers.
- Extras: It’s not just ice catchers that can make a big difference to the quality of your bong. Consider percolator bongs, which have even more levels of filtration for a smoother smoke, bongs with ash catchers which prevent unpleasant tasting smoke, or multiple chamber bongs.
- Budget: You also need to consider how much you’re willing, or able, to spend on an ice bong. Some of the cheapest models will typically be portable mini bongs, while some cheap bongs will typically be made of thinner glass than more expensive ones, which means they’re more likely to break. Having a higher budget will also mean you can pay for fancy designs, although many will see this as unnecessary.
