What is a glass bong?
Glass bongs are the most common, and most popular, type of water pipe in the UK. There’s nothing particularly modern or fancy about them, having been around since at least the 1970s, but they hold significant advantages over other types of bong, such as acrylic or ceramic bongs.
The name ‘glass water bong’ refers to the materials used to build the water pipe, and it differentiates them from those built with other materials, which could be metal, silicone, ceramic, or even wood. Glass bongs come in all shapes and sizes, with some of course having better features than others, while prices range from just a few quid to a few hundred.
What types of glass bong can I get?
As we mentioned previously, glass bongs can be found in all shapes and sizes. Some can be quite large but beautifully designed, ideal for use as a decorative ornament as well as a smoking device, while others are much more simple and are small enough to be carried around for regular, everyday use.
- Straight tube bongs: This is probably the most basic type of glass bong, but they’re also the easiest to use, while they’re classic design means they will rarely be mistaken for anything else.
- Beaker bongs: These glass bongs look like they’ve come straight out of a science lab, not dissimilar to those glass beakers we used in our chemistry lessons. Their wide base makes them more sturdy, while at the same time offering a fuller hit, making them ideal for regular use.
- Percolator bongs: These glass water bongs feature an extra component that sets them apart - a percolator. This acts like an extra filter, diffusing your smoke to give you an all-round smoother and cooler hit.
- Ice bongs: This is another type of glass water bong that is designed to cool down your smoke to provide more satisfying sessions. They include notches, known as ice catchers, in the neck of the bong, which you can place ice cubes in that will then cool down the water and your smoke.
- Mini bongs: Also known as portable bongs, travel bongs, or bubblers, these are essentially the same as a regular glass bong, albeit small and compact enough for you to carry around with you and use on the go.
- Honeycomb bongs: These work in essentially the same way that glass percolator bongs do, but the percolators themselves are designed like honeycombs, giving off a cool, elegant aesthetic that will be sure to impress your mates.
- Big bongs: These glass bongs are truly eye-catching, with huge bong necks and designs that make them ideal as ornamental pieces. Bigger chambers also allow for bigger hits and bigger clouds of smoke, so are a great way to show off to your friends.
- Gravity bongs: These glass water bongs are pretty technical devices, and they work by creating a vacuum which provides a smoother and all-round better cloud of smoke for you to inhale. Gravity bongs are often expensive though, and can be tricky to use for beginners.
- Multi chamber bongs: Also known as recycler bongs, these somewhat technical-looking water pipes use multiple chambers for extra filtration, creating a smoother and better tasting cloud of smoke.
Advantages of a glass bong
There are many benefits to using a glass water bong over other types of smoking, including traditional roll ups and other types of bong.
One of the best reasons to choose a glass bong is the effect the material has on your herbs. The water in a glass bong filters the smoke from your dry herbs better than with other types of bong, such as ceramic, acrylic, or wood, creating a much better tasting and overall smoother hit of smoke.
The bong water in a glass bong helps to filter the smoke as it makes it’s way up to your lungs. This provides a much cleaner smoke, and is therefore less harmful to your lungs compared to more traditional methods of smoking, such as roll ups, pipes, and chillums.
Disadvantages of a glass bong
Of course, there are also some drawbacks to glass bongs that you should be aware of before committing to a purchase.
First of all, they’re much more likely to break than either silicone or acrylic bongs, as well as metal or wooden ones. It is possible to find durable glass bongs, however, with the thicker the glass the better.
They also tend to be a lot more expensive than either type of plastic bong, while they’re less likely to come in such a vast array of funky designs and colours that you’d get with acrylic or silicone bongs.
What is the best glass bong?
The best glass bong for you will depend on your own personal preferences and budget. That being said, we have a wide range of glass water bongs here at Everyone Does It, so you’ll be sure to find something to suit your needs after a quick search.
Some of the most popular glass models from our selection of bongs include the Bong 7.0 3 Piece, the Stemless 4 Arm Tree Perc Bong, and the Bong Icemaster 7mm.
