What is a spoon pipe?
Spoon pipes are a type of smoking pipe that is shaped liked the common kitchen utensil they’re named after, and are primarily used for smoking tobacco or dry herbs. A spoon pipe will typically have a very simple but stylish design, with a wide bowl at one end for your tobacco and dry herbs, and a neck that thins out towards a narrow mouthpiece at the other end.
The best spoon pipes will also have a small carburetor, or carb hole, on the side of the bowl. This works in a similar to way to a carb hole on a regular bong - covering the hole with your finger as you light your materials and inhale gives you greater control over the size of your hits.
Why use glass pipes?
Unlike wood pipes, which may be preferred by down to earth natural hippies, glass blown pipes are, in theory, just as natural. They do not heat up as much when smoking, unlike conventional wooden pipes, allowing you to take a proper hit. Glass pipes cool the smoke down, making it cooler and easier to draw. Most importantly, they taste great, thanks to them not needing to take on the flavour of the pipe's material. For example, you may experience the taste of burnt wood when using wood pipes. If you use papers to smoke but prefer natural ones as to remain cleaner, then when you use a pipe you should want a glass pipe for the same reason.
How to use a spoon pipe
Using a spoon pipe is fairly straightforward, and follows very much the same process as a regular smoking pipe.
- First you must pack your bowl with your tobacco or dry herbs, making sure to grind your herbs before. Try not to pack it too tightly as this will restrict airflow and make it harder to get a good hit, but at the same time you don’t want to pack it too loosely as you could end up burning through your herbs too quickly. For the best results, place a small screen at the bottom of your bowl to prevent any herbs or bits of tobacco entering the pipe and into your mouth.
- You can then light your tobacco or dry herbs, making sure to cover the carb hole with your finger if there is one, and slowly inhale. As you’re inhaling, gently let go of the carb hole and take in the rest of the hit. Continue this process until your materials are spent.
- After each session, you should make sure to clean your spoon pipe to maintain its quality and durability. You can do this by scraping any residue from the bowl with a specialised pipe cleaner, or other cleaning tool. For the best results, you should soak it with isopropyl alcohol, and then after you’ve removed any debris from the bowl, rinse it out with water and leave to dry.
What to look for in a spoon pipe
When looking for a new spoon pipe, there are a few criteria you should consider before committing to a purchase, in order to get the best glass spoon pipe for your needs and preferences.
- Material: Spoon pipes are typically made of glass - borosilicate glass to be precise, which is a thick and durable type of glass that is resistant to extreme temperatures. However, spoon pipes can also be found in a range of other materials, including acrylic, silicone, metal, wood, and ceramic.
- Size: Spoon pipes also come in a range of sizes, and in general, the bigger the better. This is because bigger bowls allow for bigger hits and longer sessions, they are typically made of thicker glass meaning they’re more durable, and they’re also a lot easier to clean.
- Colour: While most glass spoon pipes will be clear or transparent, we also stock a range of bright and snazzy spoon pipes that come in a wide array of colours and funky designs.
Choose from cheap glass pipes with basic, functional designs or elaborate, heady glass pipes with intricate artisan designs. From classic glass spoon pipes to simple glass chillums and one hit pipes, the EDIT collection of glass pipes has something for everyone.
