What is a dab nail?
A dab nail, also known as a concentrate nail or banger, is a small piece of sturdy material, usually quartz or titanium, that is used to vaporize essential oils from wax and concentrates. They can be connected to a small bong or water pipe via a downstem, making up a key component of what is known as a ‘dab rig’.
Dab nails work in much a similar way to regular bong bowls, with the main differences being that they’re designed for concentrates or wax as opposed to dry herbs, and the ingredients are heated to a point of vaporization as opposed to combustion. This provides a much cleaner and smoother hit than regular bongs can provide, and dab rigs are increasing in popularity among regular smokers.
How do dab nails work?
To use your dab nail, you first need to connect it to your bong in the same way you would with a regular bong bowl. You then heat the dab nail with your dabbing torch. If you have an electric dab rig, however, then you can automatically heat your nail to a pre-determined temperature without the need for a butane torch.
For the best results, you should heat your dab nail to just below the combustion point of the concentrates you intend to use. You should then let it cool for up to a minute, before placing your concentrates in the dab nail and slowly inhaling.
Types of dab nail
Dab nails are heated to extremely high temperatures, often in excess of 200°C, so for this reason they need to be made out strong material that is resistant to such extreme heat. But there’s more than just one material that is able to withstand these temperatures, so you’ve got a choice of different types of dab nail:
- Quartz dab nails: This is one of the most popular types of dab nail, as quartz can withstand extremely high temperatures. It also heats up quickly (often in as little as 5 seconds!) and stays hot for longer than either glass or ceramic, so quartz nails are typically the most durable and long-lasting type of banger, as well as the easiest to use.
- Titanium dab nails: This is another common type of banger, with titanium being well-known for it’s durability. Titanium nails can be heated to extreme temperatures, and they’re almost impossible to break by simply dropping on the floor, so they are a great option for those looking for a long-lasting dab nail. One drawback of titanium nails, however, is the slightly metallic taste it leaves in the vapour, while cheap titanium dab nails could contain toxins and other impurities that can damage your lungs after prolonged use.
- Ceramic dab nails: These dab nails are more durable than glass nails, but not as much as titanium nails. Ceramic can withstand high temperatures, but it’s also susceptible to breaking should you be clumsy with it. However, ceramic nails are often a budget-friendly option compared to their alternatives.
- Glass dab nails: This is the most common type of dab nail, and what will likely be included when you purchase a dab rig. The best thing about glass nails is that they’re easy to use and clean, but they’re much less resistant to heat than either quartz, titanium, or ceramic, so they’re not ideal for regular or long-term dabbers.
It’s not just the material that you can chop and change when it comes to dab nails. They also come in a few different styles:
- Domed dab nails: These feature a dome on top of the nail, which helps to keep the heat in and maintain the dab nail’s temperature. They are more efficient than domeless dab nails in keeping all the vapour within the dab rig, while they’re also safer to use.
- Domeless dab nails: These are ideal for dabbers who want to take big hits. They are generally larger than domed nails, so they allow for more of your concentrates to be vaporized at once, while they also heat up much quicker than domed dab nails.
- Male dab nails: These are designed to be used in conjunction with female joints. They typically have a protruding rod which fits neatly into the female joint of a dab rig.
- Female dab nails: The opposite of male nails, female dab nails have a small slot which can be fitted onto a male joint on a dab rig.
- E-nails: Also known as electric dab nails, these eliminate the need for a dabbing torch, instead heating up your concentrates automatically at the press of a button. They will often have precise temperature controls, and will either be battery powered or will have to plugged into the mains.
