When looking for the perfect vaporizer, the sheer volume of choice on offer can be overwhelming, especially for beginners. You’ll likely come across desktop vaporizers, portable vaporizer, dry herb vaporizer, and concentrate vaporizers, all of which you may be able to work out what they mean from their name. But some other terms that may be a bit more confusing to you, might be ‘convection vaporizers’ and ‘conduction vaporizers’.
Both of these terms refer to the heating method utilized by any type of vaporizer, whether it’s portable vape or a desktop unit, or for dry herbs or concentrate. While early vaporizers used conduction, many of the later models employ convection heating methods, and these are in fact more efficient.
But what exactly are convection vaporizers? And how do they work? Read on to find out, and see if you can find a convection vape here at Everyone Does It for you to get started with.
What is a convection vaporizer and how does it work?
A convection vaporizer can be any type of vaporizer that uses convection to heat up the dry herbs or concentrates that you want to vape. This method uses a fan that blows hot air in order to heat your materials, as opposed to direct contact with a heat source, which is employed by conduction vapes. Convection vaporizers work in a similar way to a traditional oven, as opposed to a hob or frying pan.
With convection vaporizers, the heat source is activated when you inhale, creating a stream of hot air which flows through the oven or heating chamber where your ground herbs or concentrates are placed, creating a vapour which then flows into your lungs via the mouthpiece.
In addition, many models have adjustable temperature controls, which allow you to set it to your exact preferred temperature in order to produce just the right amount of vapour for your needs.
Are convection vaporizers more efficient than conduction vaporizers?
In short, yes. Convection vaporizers are more efficient when it comes to vaporizing dry herbs or concentrate compared to conduction vaporizers, and this is for two key reasons.
First of all, using hot air as a heat source rather than direct contact means the heat is spread more evenly throughout your materials and they’re less likely to get burnt. Secondly, the stream of hot air is only activated each time you inhale, unlike a conduction device which will still be slowly burning your contents in between puffs.
Convection vaporizers also tend to have superior build-quality than conduction models, with many even coming with an automatic shut-off feature. This means you don’t have to worry about your device overheating should you forget to turn it off after use.
However, convection vaporizers may not be the most efficient type of vaporizer around, as there are an increasing number of so-called ‘hybrid vaporizers’ that you can get your hands on. These use a hybrid heating system, which is a combination of both convection and conduction heating methods, in an attempt to give you the best quality and best tasting vapour possible.
How to use a convection vaporizer
Using a convection vaporizer should be fairly straightforward, even for beginners. That being said, each model will have a slightly different way of doing things, but in general, all you need to do is:
- Make sure it has sufficient charge. Portable vapes tend to have rechargeable batteries, while desktop vaporizers will need to be plugged in at the wall.
- Place your dry herbs or concentrate into the heating chamber or oven. If using dry herbs, make sure to grind them first, and don’t pack them too tightly, as the air will need to effectively flow through them for you to get the best hit.
- Power on your device and set it to your preferred temperature. This will ultimately depend on the materials you’re using and the combustion point of its active ingredients, but with most convection vapes you’ll be able to play around and find the perfect temperature.
- Once the desired temperature has been reached, you simply have to inhale at the mouthpiece to get a strong, smooth hit. You can keep doing this until the dry herbs or concentrate has been spent.
- Once you’ve finished your sessions, it’s important to clean your convection vape in between every use. Each model will have slightly different recommendations about how to do this, so we suggest referring to your user manual, but the simplest way is to remove any debris, clean it with isopropyl alcohol, rinse it with water, and then leave to dry. Always remember to wait until your device has cooled down before attempting to clean it.
Are convection vaporizers worth it?
There are of course many benefits to using convection vapes over conduction vapes, some of which we’ve touched on previously, but there can also be some drawbacks depending on what type of vaper you are.
Pros of convection vaporizers
- Much more efficient method of heating your dry herbs or concentrates than conduction heating.
- They create a better quality, as well as more flavourful and aromatic vapour than conduction vapes do, for an all-round better vaping experience.
- Tends to be the norm for desktop vaporizers, which are the ‘gold standard’ of vaporizers and ideal for experienced vapers and those who like long sessions.
- They often come with precise temperature controls, either with standard buttons, a digital display, or even via a smartphone app. This allows you to play around with the temperature settings to find the perfect heat for your vaping experience.
- Convection vaporizers tend to be easier to clean than conduction vapes, as your materials are not coming in to direct contact with the heat source, so it’s less likely that any residue or ash will be left over.
- All in all, it’s much safer for your lungs and the environment compared to traditional methods of smoking, such as roll ups and bongs.
- The risk of combustion is lower with convection vapes, meaning you’re less likely to be left with a burnt taste in your mouth.
Cons of convection vaporizers
- Thanks to their extra component (fan), and their generally superior build quality, convection vapes tend to be more expensive than conduction vapes. However, this isn’t always the case as bargains can always be found, so make sure to shop around before buying.
- Because you’re heating up the chamber with hot air rather than direct contact, convection vaporizers generally take longer to heat up, so you have to wait that bit longer before vaping.
- Although the vapour produced by convection vapes is better quality, and better tasting, than conduction vapes, it doesn’t produce such thick clouds of vapour. So, if big clouds of vapour and blowing rings is your thing, you may want to consider this.
- Packing your dry herbs or concentrate can be a bit more tricky with convection vapes, as you need to get the density balance just right in order for enough hot air to flow through it.
- Portable vaporizers tend to use conduction heating methods, so if you’re after a vape that you can take use on the go, you’ll have less choice if it’s a convection model you’re after.
- The battery life of convection vaporizers tends to be lower than those of conduction vapes, so you may have to recharge your device more frequently.
What type of convection vaporizer should I get?
As we mentioned before, vaporizers come in all shapes and sizes, and there are fundamental differences between the different types of product. As a ‘convection vaporizer’ refers to the heating method only, they could in reality fall under any other category of vape, apart from conduction vapes.
Some of the types of convection vaporizer include:
- Dry herb vaporizers
- Concentrate vaporizers
- Dual-use vaporizers
- Desktop vaporizers
- Portable vaporizers
What is the best convection vaporizer?
Like many vaping products, the overall best convection vaporizer for you will come down to your personal preferences and budget.
However, in general, the best convection vaporizers are the ones that have a large heating chamber, and have the capabilities to heat your materials to over 200°C. The larger the chamber, the more efficient it will be at heating your ingredients. This means you’ll be able to use less of your dry herbs/concentrate per session, but also enjoy longer sessions at the same time.
But if you’re looking for something small, then we also stock a lot of portable vaporizers with convection heating elements. Whichever type of convection vape you want, some of the best that we stock include:
- Utillian 5 Vaporizer
- Mighty Vaporizer
- AirVape X Vaporizer
- Volcano Vaporizer Classic
- Firefly 2 Vaporizer
- Silver Surfer Vaporizer
